So when I heard this week that Laura Ashley was launching a revival collection of nine pieces inspired by its archive of Sixties prints and cuts, I was desperate to see if, 50 years on, their clothes would work on a 73-year-old grandmother like me. I owed a lot to the label for forcing hemlines back down and away from the micro-minis that looked so disastrous on a pear-shape like me. The label foresaw the change in mood as midis, maxis and flower power were about to see us into the Seventies. When I went on jobs, I was thrilled when I saw its clothes hanging on rails for fashion shoots with photographers such as David Bailey, John French and Brian Duffy. I was smitten and staggered out with half the shop!Īnd I wasn't the only one to love Laura Ashley. They had the era's defining geometric prints (which I adored), but the styles were floatier and more romantic than those put out by other designers.

Intrigued, I visited and was blown away: it was full of fresh and feminine smocks and shifts. Towards the end of the decade, I remember being told by a model friend about a new shop called Laura Ashley in untrendy South Kensington that she thought would be right up my street. The staid styles of the previous decades - all long hemlines and girlish shapes - were thrown out and replaced with daring geometric prints, hot pants and, of course, the mini skirt. As a Vogue model in Sixties London, I was right at the forefront of fashion.
